What is Eczema?

Eczema (also called atopic dermatitis) is a condition characterized by skin that is dry, red, and itchy.

While eczema is more common in children, it can occur at any age.

Eczema is a chronic (long-lasting) condition that flares up and improves periodically. Symptoms of eczema include dry, itchy, red, or brown patches, small, elevated bumps which may act like blisters, or thickened, cracking skin. Oozing or crusting may also occur when eczema is scratched.

Eczema can be present anywhere on the body, but is more commonly found on the hands, wrists, feet, ankles, neck and upper chest, eyelids, and inside the bends of the knees and elbows. Many factors can worsen the symptoms of eczema; these include dry skin, stress, sweat, scratching, and harsh cleansers.

Eczema Treatment Options

While there is no definitive cure for eczema, Georgia Skin Cancer & Aesthetic Dermatology provides many treatment options to help ease or resolve the symptoms during flares. Treatments are selected by your provider depending on the location and severity of your eczema.

Common treatment options include oral and topical corticosteroids. Oral antibiotics may be prescribed if, due to scratching and breaking of the skin, an infection has arisen. Oral antihistamines may be helpful for controlling itching. At home, it is important to use gentle soaps and moisturizers free of harsh chemicals or scents. Regular moisturizing after bathing with gentle creams or ointments is also important in maintaining your skin’s water barrier to prevent flares.
